November 2011 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian

Many thanks to parents for your continued support with our dress code. We now have very few pupils who arrive at school in inappropriate clothing.

  1. Staffing
We have now appointed an Acting Principal Teacher of Business Education. Mrs Morag Mollon will be joining us later this month to cover a maternity leave.

  2. School Show
We were delighted with the wonderful performances of our School Show, ‘The Buddy Holly Story’. A number of photographs from the show are featured on our website at

  3. S3 Parents' Evening
We received very positive feedback from the Parent Questionnaires at the recent S3 Parents’ Evening and we will aim to further improve the organisation of these evenings.

  4. Remembrance Service
There will be a Remembrance Service held in the Assembly Hall at 2.00 pm on Sunday 13 November.

  5. Parent Council / Parents' Association
We are fortunate to have a very active Parent Council and Parents’ Association. The Parents’ Association is hoping to recruit new members so please come along and find out more about our school and how you can help provide the best opportunities for our pupils.
At the next Parents’ Association meeting on Monday 21 November we will have a presentation on GLOW by Mr Farr. This is the web based system that provides a variety of learning materials and much more.
Details of all meetings, dates and times are on the Community Section of our website:

  6. Parents' Association Christmas Raffle
The raffle tickets for our annual raffle will be issued soon and we ask you to support this. The Parents’ Association use this money to support our pupils and improve the facilities around the school. Last year the Parents’ Association provided new benches in the playground and supported the Choral Shield. The pupils were encouraged to make suggestions through the Pupil Council on how any money raised is spent.

  7. SQA Appeals
Results for Standard Grade and Intermediate appeals are now with departments and Principal Teachers are in the process of informing pupils concerned of the outcome.

  8. SQA Examination Prelims

The Dates for the Prelims are:

    • S3: Monday 28 November - Friday 9 December inclusive
    • S5/6: Monday 30 January - Wednesday 8 February inclusive
  9. Further information on the Prelims will be sent out to parents soon. Pupils will be given Study Leave for these dates, but may find one or two exams are held outwith this time to accommodate all subjects.

  10. UCAS (University and College Admissions Service
Senior pupils who intend studying at University were recently provided with a pack on UCAS arrangements at Dalziel. These packs contained a comprehensive booklet providing a step-by-step guide on completing the form online. The pack also features a Parent Guide.

Senior pupils who have indicated that they wish to make a UCAS application should have completed the form by our internal deadline: Friday 14 December 2011
  11. Please contact your child’s Pupil Support teacher if you have any queries about the process or, indeed, if you require further information on any aspect of your son/daughter’s application.

  12. Careers Education Information
The Careers Adviser, Shona Thomas, is in school on Tuesdays and Thursdays to hold Career Interview Sessions for pupils who have requested appointments. Careers Advisers can provide pupils with invaluable information on various University and College courses. They can also advise on the changing job market highlighting career areas which are more likely to allow pupils to gain employment given the current information available.

Shona can be contacted either via the school’s website under the curriculum section or by contacting P Owens of the Pupil Support Department (01698 274900) who will help arrange an appointment for your child. The school welcomes parents who wish to attend the careers appointment with their son/daughter - just contact us at the school to say you intend to do so.
