May 2017 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian,
The SQA examinations are now well underway. Once again, can I wish every success to all our pupils who are sitting exams?

  1. Tour Series Cycle Event
The Tour Series Round 7 will take place in Motherwell on Tuesday 23 May. This will be a spectacular event in the town and I am sure many of you will be interested spectators. However, it will result in several road closures around the school. Please be aware that the Advanced Higher Biology, Higher Human Biology and Nat 5 Biology exams also take place on Tuesday 23 May and candidates should allow extra travel time on this day.

Further details are available on the school website.

  2. The Dalzielian
Our yearbook, ‘The Dalzielian’, will be on sale as usual in early June. Priced at £12, this is subsidised to keep the costs down. ‘The Dalzielian’ is a great memento, documenting the last twelve months in the school, so make sure you get your copy in June.

  3. Parents' Association Quiz Night
The Parents’ Association would like to invite you to their Quiz Night on Friday 19 May, which is being held in the Dalziel Bowling Club (directly across from Knowetop Primary School), starting at 7.30 pm. The Quiz Night is a great, fun evening open to all adults (you don’t need to be a member of the Parents’ Association), so come along and bring your friends. Tickets, which include supper and DJ entertainment, are £8.00 each - payable on the night. For catering purposes, could I please ask that you e-mail:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you would like tickets. All profits go to support the school.

  4. Choral Shield
Once again, The Choral Shield takes place in the Civic Concert Hall in Motherwell and tickets will be on sale in June priced as follows:
      • Wednesday 21 June - £8.00
      • Thursday 22 June - £10.00

Order forms will be handed out to pupils after the SQA examinations.

  5. Primary Transition Programme
As always, this year, we have an extensive transition programme in place for Primary 7 pupils. This begins with the Games/Activity Evening on Monday 22 May at 6.30 pm. An Information Evening will take place on Tuesday 6 June at 4.30 pm, when pupils and parents can speak to staff from many departments and this will be followed by our two Intake Days on Tuesday 13 June and Wednesday 14 June.

  6. S2/S3 Barcelona Trip
This year, a group of 35 S2/3 pupils will be visiting Barcelona from 31 May - 6 June. The trip combines a number of educational visits with sight-seeing tours. Both pupils and staff are looking forward to the trip.

  7. S1 London Trip
This year, a group of 44 S1 pupils will be visiting London from 30 May - 2 June. They are all very much looking forward to the trip which will include seeing the musical “Aladdin”, visiting the Imperial War Museum and the Harry Potter set.

  8. S2/S3 Belgium/France Trip
This year, a second trip has been offered to 30 S2/3 pupils, who will be visiting Belgium and France on a European Business Trip from 6-11 June. The trip will include educational visits as well as sight-seeing experiences.

  9. Deaf Football Tournament
The annual Deaf Football tournament takes place on Friday 9 June at Rouken Glen Park. Our hearing impaired pupils have been training hard all year and we wish them luck and hope they return to school with the winner’s trophy again this year.

  10. Sponsored Walk
Our annual Sponsored Walk will take place on Thursday 25 May. All the money raised will be donated to charity, including the Cerebral Palsy Centre.

  11. Free School Meals and Clothing Grants
Any parents/guardians wishing to apply for free school meals or clothing grants can download an application form via www.northlanarkshire.go.uk/freeschoolmeals or collect a form from the School Office.

Any parents/guardians who applied last year should have either been sent a letter advising them of their entitlement and automatic award or an application form for completion.

Applications relating to the new term will be accepted by First Stop Shops from the first week in May. Early submissions are encouraged to ensure clothing grants are made and free school meals are registered for the start of the new session.

  12. General Election
The school is to be used as a polling station for the General Election on Thursday 8 June and will therefore be closed to pupils.
