June 2016 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

  1. The Dalzielian
Our yearbook, The Dalzielian, is on sale now. Priced at £12, this is subsidised to keep the costs down. This is a great memento documenting the last twelve months in the school. Make sure you get your copy.

  2. Choral Shield
Choral Shield rehearsals are now well underway and we look forward to great shows on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 June. Tickets are on sale from the School Office and an order form has been issued to each pupil along with this newsletter.

  3. Science & Technology Fayre
The Science and Technology Fayre will take place on Friday 10 June and we are sure this will be a great success. Our thanks go to the growing list of sponsors who support this excellent event.

  4. Education Maintenance Allowance
Application forms for any pupils, over the age of 16, wishing to apply for the above allowance will soon be available from the School Office.

  5. Dalziel Day Out
This year over 400 pupils will participate in our school day out on Friday 17 June. This year’s venues include Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Go-karting and Horse-riding. Pupils will be notified at assemblies of arrangements for the event.

  6. Staffing
Mr Ian Grimes will be retiring from Support for Learning at the end of June and will be missed by both staff and pupils alike. Ian has been a supply teacher in the school on a part-time basis for many years and we wish him all the best for the future.

Mrs Rona Whittaker will also be leaving us at the end of June as she is being redeployed to another school from August. Rona has served as a Classroom Assistant at Dalziel for 11 years and has been a huge asset to the school and will be greatly missed by all at Dalziel.

  7. Partnership
All S3 pupils have been offered the chance to take part in a unique and exciting opportunity, available only to pupils of Dalziel High School. In S4, all pupils participate in a Work Experience placement every Wednesday afternoon. As a result of a growing partnership between the school and New College Lanarkshire (Motherwell campus) 32 pupils will have the opportunity to attend college every Wednesday afternoon as an alternative to a Work Experience placement. On offer are National 4 Engineering and National 4 Childcare. Both courses will be mentored by related specialists in the two fields. AMEC, one of the world’s leading engineering, project management and consultancy companies, will continue to provide support, including providing onsite visits and advice within schools.

  8. Free School Meals & Clothing Grant
Any parents/guardians wishing to apply for free school meals or clothing grants can download an application form via www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals or collect a form from the School Office.

Any parents/guardians who applied last year should have either been sent a letter advising them of their entitlement and automatic award or an application form for completion.

Applications relating to the new term will be accepted by First Stop Shops from the first week in May. Early submissions are encouraged to ensure clothing grants are made and free school meals are registered for the start of the new session.

  9. School Show
Rehearsals for this year’s School Show, “The Wiz”, are well underway. In keeping with the tradition of previous years, our School Show pupils will perform a selection of songs from the show at this year’s Choral Shield.

  10. Celebrating Success
We are very pleased to highlight the sporting success of one of our S1 pupils, Mia Gallacher, a very talented figure skater. Mia won the silver medal at the 2015/2016 British Championships - Novice A Category and was asked to represent Britain at the Sportland Trophy 2016 International Competition in Budapest where she was placed 10th out of 40. Well done, Mia, on your great achievement.

  11. Uniform
