June 2014 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian

  1. The Dalzielian
Our yearbook, ‘The Dalzielian’, is on sale now. Priced at £12, this is subsidised to keep the costs down. ‘The Dalzielian’ is a great memento, documenting the last twelve months in the school, so make sure you get your copy in June.

  2. Parents’ Association Quiz Night
The Parents’ Association would like to invite you to their Quiz Night on Friday 6 June, which is being held in the Davie Cooper Suite, starting at 7.30 pm. The Quiz Night is a great, fun evening open to all adults (you don’t need to be a member of the Parents’ Association), so come along and bring your friends. Tickets are £7.50 each, which includes supper, and are available from the School Office or a member of the Parents’ Association Committee.

  3. Choral Shield
Choral Shield rehearsals are now well underway and we look forward to great shows on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 June. Tickets are on sale from the School Office and an order form will shortly be issued to each pupil.

  4. The Science & Technology Fayre
The Science and Technology Fayre will take place on Friday 6 June and I am sure it will be a great success. Our thanks go to the growing list of sponsors who support this excellent event.

  5. Education Maintenance Allowance
Application forms for any pupils, over the age of 16, wishing to apply for the above allowance are now available from the School Office.

  6. Uniform
Could I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child wears the full school uniform each day. As a reminder before you buy next session’s uniform, this consists of:-
    • Blazer
    • White Shirt
    • Black/Dark Grey Trousers or skirt or Dalziel Tartan skirt
    • Plain Black/Dark Grey jumper or cardigan
    • School Tie
    • Black Shoes (not trainers/converse shoes)
    • No Hooded Tops
    • Trousers should in no way resemble jeans or leggings.

  7. Dalziel Day Out
This year 400 pupils will participate in our school day out on Friday 20 June. This year’s venues include Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Go-karting, X-Scape and Horse-riding. Pupils will be notified at assemblies of arrangements for the event.

  8. Staffing
A number of staff will be leaving us at the end of term. May I express my thanks for all their hard work and dedication to the school.

Mr Bob Browning is retiring after 27 years of service within the school. We wish him a happy, healthy retirement.

Mr Chris Rewhorn will be taking up a new post as Principal Teacher of RME at Prestwick Academy and Miss Ruth Scott is taking up a one year secondment to study Gaelic education and we wish them both every success.

We are delighted to welcome Mr Stephen Agnew, who will be joining our Maths Department in August.

  9. Free School Meals and Clothing Grants
Any parents/guardians wishing to apply for free school meals or clothing grants can download an application form via www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals or collect a form from the School Office.

Any parents/guardians who applied last year should have either been sent a letter advising them of their entitlement and automatic award or an application form for completion.

Applications relating to the new term will be accepted by First Stop Shops from the first week in May. Early submissions are encouraged to ensure clothing grants are made and free school meals are registered for the start of the new session.

  10. Partnership
All S3 pupils have been offered the chance to take part in a unique and exciting opportunity, available only to pupils of Dalziel High School. In S4 all pupils participate in a Work Experience placement every Wednesday afternoon. As a result of a growing partnership between the school, New College Lanarkshire (Motherwell campus) and AMEC, one of the world’s leading engineering, project management and consultancy companies, 16 pupils will have the opportunity to attend college every Wednesday afternoon as an alternative to a Work Experience placement. The focus of the course will be on engineering and will result in a National 4 qualification in Engineering Skills. AMEC will provide support, including providing onsite visits and advice within schools.

  11. Fundraising - STV Appeal
Events are well underway to raise funds for the STV Appeal. A percentage of funds raised from the Sponsored Walk will be donated to the appeal and a staff cycle will also take place on Thursday 12 June to raise funds.

A Non-uniform Day will take place on Thursday 19 June to help raise money. All pupils will donate £1 in order to wear casual clothes for the day (no football colours should be worn).
