May 2013 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian

The SQA examinations are now well underway. Once again, can I wish every success to all our pupils who are sitting exams.

  1. The Dalzielian
Our yearbook, ‘The Dalzielian’, will be on sale as usual in early June. Priced at £12, this is subsidised to keep the costs down. ‘The Dalzielian’ is a great memento, documenting the last twelve months in the school, so make sure you get your copy in June.

  2. Parents' Association Quiz Night
The annual PTA Quiz Night will be held in the Social Area in the school on Monday 10 June 2013. Starting at 7.30 pm, the quiz is a great, fun evening open to all adults (you don’t have to be a member of the PTA). Come along as a group of family or friends or join with others on the night to form a team. Tickets are £5.00 each, which includes a complimentary glass of wine or two soft drinks. Tickets are available from the school or any member of the PTA Committee.

  3. Choral Shield
Once again, The Choral Shield takes place in the Civic Concert Hall in Motherwell and tickets will be on sale in June priced as follows:
    • Tuesday 25 June - £7.00
    • Wednesday 26 June - £10.00
Order forms will be handed out to pupils after the SQA examinations.

  4. The Science & Technology Fayre
This year’s Annual Science and Technology Fayre opens on Thursday 6 June with the final taking place on Friday 7 June. This is a wonderful event and we encourage parents to come along to the Science Fayre Open Night on Thursday 6 June between 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm.

Our thanks to the growing list of sponsors including: Babcock Marine, Barr Construction, BOC, Laing O’Rourke, Nantronix and SEPA.

  5. Primary Transition Programme
As always, this year, we have an extensive transition programme in place for Primary 7 pupils. This begins with the Games/Activity Evening on Monday 20 May at 6.30 pm. An Information Evening will take place on Wednesday 5 June at 4.30 pm, when pupils and parents can speak to staff from many departments and this will be followed by our two Intake Days on Tuesday 11 June and Wednesday 12 June.

  6. Annual School Survey
This is a reminder that this year’s School Survey results are available on the school website. Many thanks go to the pupils, parents and staff who took the time to complete the Survey.

  7. York Trip
Once again, 45 S1 pupils will visit York as part of the S1 Social Subjects course. This will take place from Tuesday 28 May to Friday 31 May.

  8. Deaf Football Tournament
The annual Deaf Football tournament takes place on Friday 7 June at Rouken Glen Park. Our hearing impaired pupils have been training hard all year and we wish them luck and hope they return to school with the winners’ trophy.

  9. Sponsored Walk
Our annual Sponsored Walk will take place on Friday 14 June. All the money raised will be used to refurbish the changing rooms at Dalziel Park.

  10. Free School Meals and Clothing Grant
Any parents/guardians wishing to apply for free school meals or clothing grants can download an application form via www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals or collect a form from the School Office.

Any parents/guardians who applied last year should have either been sent a letter advising them of their entitlement and automatic award or an application form for completion.

Applications relating to the new term will be accepted by First Stop Shops from the first week in May. Early submissions are encouraged to ensure clothing grants are made and free school meals are registered for the start of the new session.

  11. Celebrating Success
Congratulations to Alex Dunn, S3, who had an outstanding success at the 4 Nations Quadrangular Under-15 International Badminton Tournament. He won the Boys Singles, the boys Doubles and the Mixed Doubles events, making him the first boy to win all three events. Well done, Alex!
