February 2013 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian

  1. Parents' Association
The Parents’ Association have made a generous donation of £900 to the school. This will help with the purchase of a new minibus which we hope to buy later this year.

  2. Burns Supper
Congratulations to all those who took part in the recent Burns Supper. It was a fantastic evening with great entertainment.

  3. Positive Destinations
One of the key statistics for any school is the number of pupils leaving school going into a Positive Destination (Higher Education, Further Education, Employment etc).
We were delighted when statistics became available last week to show that 98% of those leaving Dalziel had gone on to a positive destination. This is testament to the good work being done across the school and with partner agencies to give our young people the best opportunities and guidance.

  4. Customer Service Excellence Award
We are delighted to have successfully retained the Customer Service Excellence Standard, after out annual review.
Dalziel is one of only a few schools in Scotland to be awarded this standard with no partial compliances and the highest standard of compliance plus - a very rare occurrence in any educational establishment or organisation with this award. We were awarded a further 3 areas of compliance plus at this year’s review, which is an outstanding achievement for the school and highlights our commitment to all stakeholders.
Everyone at the school is very proud of our achievement and this reflects the hard work of all staff and pupils.
You can access a copy of the full report on the school website.

  5. Lanarkshire Steel Workers Memorial
We recently welcomed Mr John Scott to the school to give a short talk about the history of the steel industry in this area and the plans to create a memorial to the steelworkers. The school will aim to support this.

  6. Health Fayre
Plans are underway for our annual Health Fayre. This year’s theme is ‘Switch It, Ditch It’ and pupils and staff will be encouraged to switch junk food for fruit and other healthy snacks. A number of lunchtime events for staff and pupils have also been arranged throughout the week, including the staff v pupils Rowing Challenge. The Health Fayre takes place in the Assembly Hall from Monday 4 March to Friday 8 March.

  7. S2 Subject Choices
Those pupils who are currently in S2 have already chosen the eight subjects they will study until the end of S4. The vast majority of these pupils may be happy with the choices they have made. If, however, your son/daughteris in S2 and you would like to consider making a change, then please contact Miss Lennon, DHT, for an appointment. This should only apply to a small number of pupils who may feel that their initial choices need to be reviewed, otherwise there is no need to contact the school.
Pupils will be issued with a letter on Tuesday 19 February.

  8. Easter School
Motherwell College is hosting an Easter School again this year for S5/6 pupils from Tuesday 2 April to Friday 5 April. This is an excellent opportunity for pupils sitting Intermediate 2 and Higher Grades this year. Pupils will have the expertise of teachers within North Lanarkshire to help them revise and organise their study. They will also have access to IT and will work in small tutorial sessions. The programme is free. Application forms are available from Mrs Agnew, DHT, and should be completed as soon as possible.

  9. School Survey
As part of our ongoing commitment to improving the educational opportunities and provision in Dalziel High School, we undertake an Annual Survey. To enable us to meet the needs of all users of Dalziel, we are asking all staff, pupils and parents to complete an on-line questionnaire. This should take no more than 10 minutes to complete and therefore we would be most grateful if you could do so by Thursday 28 February. The survey can be accessed using the following link: https://www.dalzielhigh.org.uk/parentalsurvey The Password is: Dalziel

  10. Celebrating Success
Congratulations to our Girls Vocal Ensemble for a wonderful performance for St Mary’s Church Guild.
Well done to our Badminton squad for their recent success in the LASBA championships, winning 9 different finals.
Congratulation to Alex Dunn S3 who won all 3 events at the U-15 Badminton England Championships in York and all 3 events at the U-15 Badminton England Gold Badminton Tournament in Milton Keynes, making Alex Triple Champion.
