April 2011 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian

While much of April has been lost to holidays etc, it is a very busy and very important time for the school. It is crucial for those pupils preparing for examinations that we maintain their focus and support them in every way we can.

All pupils who are sitting SQA examinations have now been issued with all the information and arrangements for the exam procedures, dates and times. Please get in touch with the school if clarification or further information is needed. Can I wish all our pupils every success to achieve the results they deserve. Our staff are keen to help in any way we can, please do not hesitate to contact us.

  1. Study Leave
Study leave for S3 pupils commences on Friday 29 April and finishes on Monday 30 May.
Study leave for S5/6 pupils commences on Friday 13 May and finishes on 3 June.

  2. Dress Code
I am grateful for the continued parental support for our dress code. Our pupils look very smart in their uniforms and show commitment and a sense of belonging to our school community. Can I ask for your continued support to maintain the high standards that together we have set? The main items in the uniform are:

    • Dalziel High School Blazer (blue) with school tie

    • Grey/black trousers or grey/black/tartan skirt

    • Grey/black pullover or cardigan

  3. Choral Shield
The Choral Shield will again take place at the SECC Armadillo on Tuesday 21 June and Wednesday 22 June. Tickets will be on sale soon and again we hope to organise buses. There will be more information on this shortly but keep those dates free for what promises to be a marvellous occasion.
Tickets are priced at £7.00 for the Tuesday and £10 for the Wednesday - this is the same as last year.

  4. Sponsored Walk
We are planning a sponsored walk around Strathclyde Park on Friday 3 June for S1 and S2 pupils to raise funds for The War Memorial Trust, which runs Dalziel Park. This provides an excellent facility for our young people and our community and we hope our pupils will support this.

  5. Sponsorship of the Choral Shield
Our school has always been very well supported by local companies sponsoring school events and we are very appreciative as the sponsorship enables us to offer more opportunities for our pupils. The Choral Shield is again being sponsored by Ian Johnstone and Reid Printers and Greig House is again being sponsored by Hamilton Road Dental Practice.
We are now looking for new sponsors for Barclay House and Colville House. Please contact the school for more information if you would be interested in sponsoring these Houses.

  6. Parents' Association
The next meeting of the Parents’ Association is on Monday 9 May at 7.30 pm. It would be great to see more parents coming along to support this.

  7. Parent Council
The next meeting of the Parent Council takes place on Thursday 12 May at 7.00 pm in the School Conference Room.

  8. Dalziel Day Out
Plans are well underway for this year’s ‘Dalziel Day Out’ on Friday 17 June. Deposits have been paid and remaining balances should be paid to Mrs Allison by Friday 6 May. Further details of each trip will be issued nearer the time.

  9. P7 Transition Dates
Details will follow shortly regarding the transition events we have planned for those P7 pupils who will join us in S1 in August.

The provisional dates of these events are as follows:-

    • Monday 9 May - Games Evening

    • Thursday 2 June - Intake Evening

    • Tuesday 7 June - Intake Day

    • Wednesday 8 June - Intake Day
  10. S4 Work Experience / Wednesday Afternoon Activities Session 2011/12
To assist in the preparations for Work Experience next session, ALLS3 pupils should now have handed in their work experience options forms to the School Office for processing. If you are considering a self-found placement for your child the Contact Sheet must be returned to Mrs Dyett so that the relevant Health & Safety checks can be completed. Parents are asked to contact Mrs Dyett if there are any issues relating to Work Experience.

In-school activities such as Interest and Leisure, PE and Practical Hospitality places will be confirmed before S3 go on study leave.

It is anticipated that pupils will embark on Work Experience and Wednesday Afternoon Activities immediately on their return in August, therefore parents should ensure that employers who are offering your child a placement are aware of this.

  11. Pupil Achievement
Congratulations to the following pupils who have had national success in their particular sports:

Alex Dunn - S1, who has had much success in badminton and at the Scottish National Junior Championship in April became Under 13 Scottish National Champion for the year 2011-2012. Alex is off to Belgium this weekend as part of the Scottish team where he hopes for success in the boys’ singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Good luck, Alex.

Jack McComish - S4, who again achieved success in the Scottish Swimming Championships winning the gold medal for 200m breaststroke.

  12. Health Promotion and Nutrition
The accompanying leaflet on Health Promotion and Nutrition has been supplied by NHS Scotland as a guide for parents and carers and I hope you find it of interest.

Yours faithfully
