March 2011 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian

I would like to take this opportunity to thank pupils, parents and staff for the very warm welcome I have received since returning to the School. It is great to return to such a wonderful school with such strong traditions and high standards. I look forward to working in partnership with all sections of the school community.

This is a very busy time in the school year with numerous events underway.

  1. Talent Show
The Talent Show was a great success on 3 March. All the pupils performed well and made it a very difficult decision for the judges. Special congratulations go to:

    • 1st Place - Melissa Russell and Natasha Cowie
    • 2nd Place - Ross Thomson
    • 3rd Place - Carly Slamin
  2. Health Fayre 2011 - The Beat Goes On, Love Your Heart
This is our 17th Annual Health Fayre! That in itself is cause for celebration as it means that well over 3,500 different pupils have visited the Fayre, each one on at least 4 occasions……so hopefully the message regarding the importance of health and fitness has hit home! The Fayre was opened by Dr Docherty, Chief Cardiologist at Wishaw General Hospital.

Dr Docherty is the Clinical Lead for Cardiology in Lanarkshire and we were delighted that he took time from his busy schedule to act as our opener for the 2011 Health Fayre – ‘The Beat Goes On – Love Your Heart’.

The Health Fayre is about seeing and doing, with a range of information and activities to interest all our pupils. We are once again indebted to all those volunteers who once again gave of their time to help support our Health Fayre. They are, in no particular order:

    • Sainsbury’s Try Team
    • SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health)
    • Blood Donor Programme
    • Choose Life Campaign
    • Motherwell College
    • St Andrews Ambulance
    • Landed Peer Education
    • Smile with Confidence Campaign
    • Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland
    • North Lanarkshire Road Safety Unit
  3. School Show
Preparations are now underway for the School Show in October. This year the show will be ‘The Buddy Holly Story’.

  4. S1 Parents' Evening
S1 Parents’ Evening will be held in the School on Wednesday 16 March. Pupils will shortly be issued with appointment sheets. In addition to meeting your child’s teachers you will have the opportunity to meet with our Careers Advisor, Shona Thomas. Appointments are from 4.30 pm until 6.30 pm. There will be a short presentation at 4.00 pm in the Assembly Hall where Mrs Allison the Depute Head Teacher will outline the Options process.

  5. Red Nose Day
We will be supporting Red Nose Day on Friday 18 March with a dress down/crazy hair day. Donations will be taken at the door.

  6. Pupil Options
The Options process is now underway with information out to pupils in S1/3/4/5/6.

  7. Celebration Success
Jack McComish - Congratulations to Jack McComish, S4, who has been selected to swim for Scotland in the Wales, Ireland, Scotland, England (WISE) Games in Dublin on 25 March.
