January 2018 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Best wishes to all our pupils, staff and parents for 2018. My thanks to everyone who supported our Christmas celebrations, the Christmas Dances and Church Service.

  1. Parents' Association Christmas Raffle
Thank you for your support with the Christmas Raffle which raised £866. The money will be spent to benefit our pupils. Prizewinners’ names are listed on our website.
Many thanks to all the local businesses who donated prizes.

  2. SQA Examination Prelims
The S5/6 Prelims are currently taking place and will finish on Friday 19 January.
This year the exams are taking place in class time and pupils are not on study leave. So far, the exams are progressing well.

  3. Burns Supper
The Burns Supper takes place on Monday 29 January. All S5/6 pupils and staff are warmly welcomed to an excellent evening of Burns’ poetry and musical recitals celebrating the life and work of the great Bard. The evening kicks off at 6.30 pm in the Social Area and tickets are priced at £8.00, which includes dinner.

  4. Mobile Phones
A reminder that mobile phones are banned in school. If pupils are in possession of a mobile phone and seen by a member of staff, the mobile phone will be confiscated and a punishment exercise will be issued. Thank you for your continued support.

  5. Mock Interviews
Our annual timetable of Mock Interviews will take place from Tuesday 30 January to Thursday 1 February for S4 pupils. Many thanks to the volunteers from the local community and beyond who participate in this in order to help pupils build skills for use in the wider education and employment community.

  6. S1 Parents' Evening
The S1 Parents’ Evening will take place on Thursday 18 January from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm. Letters and appointment sheets have been issued to pupils.

  7. Personalisation and Choice
The Personalisation and Choice (Option) booklets for S3 subject choices will be issued to S2 pupils on Tuesday 6 February.

In order to support the Option process there will be a Careers Event on Thursday 8 February and also a presentation will be made to S2 parents at the S2 Parents Evening on Tuesday 20 February.

  8. Mental Health Ambassadors
Dalziel High School was invited to be part of an exciting new pilot programme to raise awareness about common mental health issues which may be experienced by young people in schools in Scotland. Fourteen S5 applicants were successfully chosen to undertake intense training to become Mental Health Ambassadors. Within their role the MHAs will act as “information points” about mental health and wellbeing for their peers: the training undertaken will enable them to answer general questions and to signpost to additional sources of information and support.

The MHAs also recently delivered sessions to S2 pupils as part of their PSE programme covering topics such as understanding stress and anxiety. Over the forthcoming months, they will be working hard to raise awareness within the school and volunteer at a ‘drop in’ space where their peers can come along to speak to them and Pupil Support Staff. S2 pupils are currently working in the Art Department to create visual representations of the messages which they have taken from the sessions: these will form part of a display in Motherwell Library during their “Love Life – Love Libraries” week in February. Mrs Nielsen and the Pupil Support team are extremely impressed by the MHAs and are looking forward to developing this wonderful resource within Dalziel High School.

If you would like more information regarding the Mental Health Ambassadors, please have a look on the school website for further information.

  9. Careers Convention
The annual Dalziel Careers Convention will take place in the school Assembly Hall on Thursday 8 February 2018 from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm. This event is open to all S1-S6 pupils and parents and it is an excellent opportunity to meet with staff from various universities, colleges and prestigious employers such as Morgan Stanley, WorleyParsons and Police Scotland.

This is an ideal opportunity for your child to gain an insight into various career progression pathways for their future and I look forward to welcoming you and your child to this wonderful event.

  10. Celebrating Success
Congratulations go to S3 pupil, Lewis Beagrie, who came second in the 14/17 year olds 100 metres Breaststroke at the British Para-Swimming Championships in December.
Lewis is now sitting in second place overall in the 17 years old and under age group for this event in Scotland this year and is now also third in Britain. A tremendous achievement.
