Once again, a group of S3 pupils identified by the Pupil Support Department were given the chance to participate in a week long training placement provided by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service.
The purpose of the Fire Reach programme is to provide training and development opportunities for young people, through Fire Service related activities. The scheme helps raise pupils’ awareness of the role of the Fire Service and other linked agencies within their community.
It is anticipated that with displayed commitment, regular attendance and the completion of the many aspects of the programme, the young people will enhance their employment prospects.
The main aims and objectives of the programme are to:-
- Develop physical and mental capabilities
- Become members or leaders of a team
- Improve self-discipline
- Improve confidence and communication skills
- Develop a knowledge and awareness of their community
- Improve safety knowledge concerning workplace and home
- Develop and understanding of the contribution the Fire Service and other agencies make to society
- Provide an opportunity to undertake basic first aid skills
- Deliver a clear community safety message.
These aims link well to the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence which by providing a programme which includes the essential elements of First Aid and the use of operational fire equipment such as hose and ladders; all within a disciplined environment. Other essential elements of the course are punctuality, good attendance, general appearance and demeanour.
At the end of the week parents and teachers are invited to attend an award ceremony when course participants give a demonstration of what they have been doing and are presented with a Basic First Aid Certificate and a certificate of participation in Fire Reach.
Approximately 6 weeks after their participation each young person is provided with a portfolio giving details of the course and feedback on their participation, along with photographic evidence of their experience.
