On Friday the 12th of January 10 pupils took part in a Business Brunch hosted by SCILT, Scotland’s Centre for Languages, at Strathclyde University.
Pupils enjoyed the opportunity to meet representatives of companies from a range of industries, all of whom are looking to recruit employees with language skills.
The morning was kicked off with a keynote speech from John MacKenzie, Partner at Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP, who demonstrated the importance of communication skills and how highly regarded staff with modern language skills are in his company. The day continued with workshops where our pupils learned some Russian and listened to why Bank ABC look for graduates who have a knowledge and understanding of other cultures and languages.
To finish, our pupils were highly entertained by the Director of Radio Lingua and polyglot, Mark Pentleton, who impressed our pupils by opening his presentation in several languages. The message of the day ‘a little language goes a long way’ clearly made an impact on our young pupils who commented that they had been inspired to learn more languages and understood how this skill could open doors for them in the future.
